Quick answer: The Prophetic method of correcting a child has five steps: ask a question, listen to the answer, teach a replacement behavior, show affection, and make du’a — without harshness or humiliation.
Introduction: Why “Gentle” Is Not Enough
Many parents have swapped “stop that!” for “I understand your feelings.” That is a good start. But the child often still does not know what to do instead. Kind words alone do not teach a skill. And harsh words alone do not teach the heart.
The Prophetic parenting correction method closes that gap. It is gentle and clear at the same time. The Prophet ﷺ did not shout, and he did not ignore mistakes. He asked, he listened, he taught the right action, he showed love, and he made du’a.
Gentle parenting in Islam is not a new idea. Modern gentle parenting gets many things right: warmth, respect and listening. But it can stop at feelings. The Sunnah goes one step further. It adds clear teaching, clear limits and du’a.
Today, many Muslim parents swing between two extremes. Some call permissiveness “gentleness.” Others call harshness “discipline.” Both miss the Prophetic example. This article shows the third way, step by step, using the narrations themselves.
A quick word before we start. If you have raised your voice or used harsh words, you are not alone. Nobody here is judging you. Every day is a new chance to try the Prophetic way. One more promise: we checked the grading of every narration below. When scholars differ, we tell you.
The Rafi’ bin Amr Incident: A Complete Prophetic Correction Framework
This is one of the best-known stories about how the Prophet ﷺ corrected children. Rafi’ bin Amr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) was hungry. He threw stones at date palms that belonged to some of the Ansar, to knock the fruit down. The owners took him to the Prophet ﷺ. In some versions, Rafi’ says he was a boy at the time.
The report mentions no hitting and no scolding. It records four things:
- He asked a question. “Rafi’, why do you throw stones at their palm trees?” (The Abu Dawud version says, “O boy, why do you throw stones at the palm trees?”)
- He listened. Rafi’ answered, “Out of hunger, O Messenger of Allah.” (In the Abu Dawud version he says, “To eat.”)
- He gave a better way. “Do not throw. Eat what falls.”
- He made du’a. “May Allah fill you and quench your thirst.”
The Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah versions add two more details. The Prophet ﷺ wiped the boy’s head and said, “O Allah, fill his stomach.”
Important note on grading: Scholars differ on this story. Imam at-Tirmidhi called his version hasan gharib sahih. But Al-Albani graded the Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah versions da’if (weak). Zubair Ali Zai also called the chain weak, because one narrator is not well known. So we use this story only as a gentle example, and we build no ruling on it. The head-wiping detail comes only from the Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah versions, so we do not rely on it. The same ideas — a question, a loving touch, du’a — also appear in narrations that are sahih. We point to them below.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
Rafi’ ibn Amr qala: Kuntu armi nakhla al-Ansar, fa-akhadhuni fa-dhahabu bi ila an-Nabiyyi ﷺ, faqala: “Ya Rafi’, lima tarmi nakhlahum?” Qala: qultu: “Ya Rasulallah, al-ju’.” Qala: “La tarmi, wa kul ma waqa’a, ashba’akallahu wa arwaak.”

Rafi’ ibn Amr said: “I used to throw stones at the date palms of the Ansar. They caught me and took me to the Prophet ﷺ. He asked, ‘Rafi’, why do you throw stones at their palms?’ I said, ‘Out of hunger, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Do not throw. Eat what falls. May Allah fill you and quench your thirst.’”
Reference: Jami at-Tirmidhi 1288. Similar versions: Sunan Abi Dawud 2622 (Book of Jihad) and Sunan Ibn Majah 2299. Grading: Imam at-Tirmidhi called it hasan gharib sahih. Al-Albani, Zubair Ali Zai and the Darussalam editors graded it da’if (weak).
Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ asked why the child did it. He heard the answer: hunger. Then he told him what to do instead and prayed for him.
Notice the order. The Prophet ﷺ started with a question, not a lecture. The answer changed everything: the child was hungry. A hungry child needs food and a better way, not only a punishment. Yet the Prophet ﷺ was still clear. He said, “Do not throw.” That is how the Prophet ﷺ corrected children: clear on the rule, kind in the way.
The Umar ibn Abi Salamah Incident: Correction at the Table
Umar ibn Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) grew up in the Prophet’s ﷺ home. He says he was a boy under the Prophet’s care. At meals, his hand wandered all over the dish. The Prophet ﷺ gave him three short instructions.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)

Umar ibn Abi Salamah said: “I was a boy in the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My hand used to move all around the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, ‘Boy, say Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is close to you.’ That has been my way of eating ever since.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 and Sahih Muslim 2022. Grading: Sahih (agreed upon).
Meaning: Three short steps a child can do right away: start with Allah’s name, use the right hand, and eat from the side of the dish nearest to you.
Look at the words: “Say Bismillah. Eat with your right hand. Eat from what is near you.” Each step is something the boy can do right now. There is no “Don’t be greedy.” There is no “What is wrong with you?” The narration records only clear, practical teaching. It mentions no anger and no shame. And the result? Umar said this stayed his way of eating from then on. A child who knows exactly what to do can change.
The Al-Hasan Incident: Urgency Without Harshness
Not every mistake can wait for a calm talk. Sometimes you must stop a child right now. Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet’s grandson, was a young child. He took a date from the charity dates and put it in his mouth. Charity was not allowed for the Prophet ﷺ and his family.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
ʿAn Abi Hurayrah (RA) anna al-Hasan ibn ʿAli akhadha tamratan min tamri as-sadaqah, fa-ja’alaha fi fihi. Faqala an-Nabiyyu ﷺ bil-Farisiyyah: “Kikh, kikh!

English
Abu Hurayrah reported that Al-Hasan ibn Ali took a date from the charity dates and put it in his mouth. The Prophet ﷺ said in Persian: “Kikh, kikh! Do you not know that we do not eat charity?”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3072 (also Bukhari 1491 and Sahih Muslim 1069). Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ stopped the child at once and gave the reason. Charity was not allowed for the Prophet ﷺ and his family.
The Prophet ﷺ stopped him at once. He used one short word, “Kikh, kikh!” (also read “kakh, kakh”). It is a word used to stop a child from something unclean. It is not an insult. Some versions also say he told the child to throw the date out (Bukhari 1491, Muslim 1069). Then he gave the reason: “Do you not know that we do not eat charity?”
Here is the lesson. When something haram or harmful is involved, act fast. But fast does not have to mean cruel. The report records a short word and a reason. It records no insult and no blow. The child heard both the rule and the why.
The 5 Principles of the Prophetic Parenting Correction Method
From these narrations, we can draw five simple principles. Each one rests on the reports above.
1. Ask before you assume
In the Rafi’ story, the Prophet ﷺ asked first. Because of the grading note above, let us also look at a narration that is sahih. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was still young and served the Prophet ﷺ. One day the Prophet ﷺ sent him on an errand. Anas said, “I will not go,” but in his heart he planned to go. On the way, he stopped near children who were playing.
Then the Prophet ﷺ came up behind him and held the back of his neck. Anas looked up and saw him smiling. The Prophet ﷺ asked a simple question.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
Qala Anas: … fa-idha Rasulullahi ﷺ qad qabada bi-qafaya min wara’i, qala: fa-nazartu ilayhi wa huwa yadhaku, faqala: “Ya Unays, adhahabta haythu amartuk?” Qala: qultu: “Na’am, ana adhhabu ya Rasulallah.”
Anas said: “… Then I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ holding me by the back of my neck from behind. I looked at him and he was smiling. He said, ‘Unays, did you go where I told you to go?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am going, O Messenger of Allah.’”
Reference: Sahih Muslim 2310. Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: Anas had delayed an errand to watch children play. The Prophet ﷺ did not shout. He came close, smiled and asked a simple question.
He asked a question. He did not accuse. So ask first, then listen to the answer. The answer may change what you do next. Ask in a way that invites an honest answer, not in a way that traps your child.
2. Teach the replacement behavior, not just the prohibition
“Don’t” is not a plan. A child needs to hear what to do instead. In the Rafi’ story, the replacement was “Eat what falls.” In the sahih narration of Umar ibn Abi Salamah, there is not even a “don’t.” All three instructions say what to do. Before you say “stop,” ask yourself: “What do I want my child to do instead?” Then say that.
3. Match the correction to the child’s level
The Prophet ﷺ used short, concrete words. “Say Bismillah.” “Eat with your right hand.” “Eat from what is near you.” A young child can hold on to words like these. With Al-Hasan, it was one short word and one short reason. You can do the same. Use few words. Name one action. A toddler and a ten-year-old need different words, but both need clarity.
4. Never humiliate
Mu’awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) was a new Muslim and a grown man. He spoke in the middle of the prayer, and the people around him stared. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ told him that normal talk does not belong in prayer, because prayer is for tasbih, takbir and Quran recitation. Mu’awiya later described that moment. These are Mu’awiya’s words about the Prophet ﷺ, not the Prophet’s own words.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)

Mu’awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami said: “May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! I have never seen a teacher, before him or after him, who taught better than he did. By Allah, he did not scold me harshly, hit me, or insult me.”
Reference: Sahih Muslim 537 (the speaker is Mu’awiya ibn al-Hakam, describing the Prophet ﷺ). Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: Mu’awiya, a new Muslim, spoke during the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ taught him the rule. Mu’awiya says he was not scolded harshly, hit or insulted.
If this is how the Prophet ﷺ treated a grown man who made a mistake in prayer, we should be very careful with children. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also described his character. She said he never struck anything with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant, except when fighting in Allah’s cause.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
ʿAn ʿAishah (RA) qalat: Ma daraba Rasulullahi ﷺ shay’an qattu bi-yadihi, wa la imra’atan wa la khadiman, illa an yujahida fi sabilillah.
Aisha said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never struck anything with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant, except when he was fighting in the cause of Allah.”
Reference: Sahih Muslim 2328. Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ was known for his self-control. He did not strike anything with his hand, except in fighting for Allah’s cause.
This report does not name children. But it shows the self-control of the Prophet ﷺ.
5. Seal the correction with affection and du’a
Correction should end with closeness, not distance. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandson Al-Hasan. A man named Al-Aqra’ said he had ten children and had never kissed any of them. The Prophet ﷺ looked at him and gave a strong reply.
Arabic

ʿAn Abi Hurayrah (RA) qala: Qabbala Rasulullahi ﷺ al-Hasana ibna ʿAliyyin wa ʿindahu al-Aqra’ ibn Habis at-Tamimiyyu jalisan. Faqala al-Aqra’: “Inna li ʿasharatan minal-walad, ma qabbaltu minhum ahada.” Fanazara ilayhi Rasulullahi ﷺ thumma qala: “Man la yarham la yurham.”

Abu Hurayrah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissed Al-Hasan ibn Ali while Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis at-Tamimi was sitting with him. Al-Aqra’ said, ‘I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at him and said, ‘Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.’”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 5997 and Sahih Muslim 2318. Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ openly kissed his grandson. He taught that a person who shows no mercy will not be shown mercy.
The Prophet ﷺ also made du’a for the young. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), then a young Companion, placed water for the Prophet’s ablution. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for him.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
ʿAn Ibn ʿAbbas: anna an-Nabiyya ﷺ dakhala al-khala’, fa-wada’tu lahu wudu’an. Qala: “Man wada’a hadha?” Fa-ukhbira, faqala: “Allahumma faqqihhu fid-deen.”
Ibn Abbas said: “The Prophet ﷺ went into the lavatory, and I placed water for his wudu. He asked, ‘Who put this?’ He was told, so he said, ‘O Allah, give him deep understanding of the religion.’”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 143 (also Sahih Muslim 2477). Grading: Sahih.
Meaning: The Prophet ﷺ made du’a for a young Companion. It shows that du’a for children is part of the Sunnah.
You can do the same after you correct your child. Put a hand on their shoulder. Make a short du’a for them. Let them leave the moment knowing you love them.
What About Discipline? The Balance of Mercy and Responsibility
Islamic discipline for kids is not permissive. The Prophet ﷺ gave parents a duty: teach children the prayer early.
Arabic
Roman English (Transliteration)
ʿAn ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, ʿan abihi, ʿan jaddihi, qala: qala Rasulullahi ﷺ: “Muru awladakum bis-salati wa hum abna’u sab’i sinin, wadribuhum ʿalayha wa hum abna’u ʿashri sinin, wa farriqu baynahum fil-madaji’.”
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Command your children to pray when they are seven years old. Strike them over it when they are ten. And separate their beds.”
Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 495. Grading: Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
Meaning: Parents must teach children the prayer from age seven. At ten, the hadith mentions striking for neglecting it, and separating the beds. Scholars explain the striking as light discipline, not torture.
Look at the timeline. Parents command and teach at seven. Only at ten does the hadith mention striking. That is three years of teaching first.
The hadith uses the word “strike.” Scholars explain this as light discipline for the sake of teaching, not torture. As we saw, we know of no authentic report that the Prophet ﷺ himself struck a child. If you are unsure how this applies to your child, ask a trusted scholar.
So correction is a form of mercy when the intention and the method are right. The Prophet ﷺ said that a person without mercy for the young is not following his way.

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and does not respect our elders.”
Reference: Jami at-Tirmidhi 1919. Grading: Hasan (Darussalam).
Meaning: Mercy to the young is part of the Prophet’s way ﷺ. He warned strongly against leaving it.
Mercy without responsibility becomes permissiveness. Responsibility without mercy becomes harshness. The Sunnah keeps both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Prophet ﷺ ever hit a child?
The authentic narrations point strongly to no. Aisha said he never struck anything with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant, except when fighting in Allah’s cause (Sahih Muslim 2328). That report does not name children, but it describes his character clearly. We know of no authentic report that he hit a child. He also kissed his grandson Al-Hasan and taught that whoever shows no mercy will receive none (Sahih al-Bukhari 5997, Sahih Muslim 2318).
What is the difference between gentle parenting and Prophetic parenting?
Gentle parenting focuses on warmth and understanding feelings. Prophetic parenting keeps the warmth and adds clear instruction, clear limits and du’a. It is neither permissive nor harsh.
At what age did the Prophet ﷺ command Salah?
He told parents to command their children to pray at age seven. The same hadith mentions striking at ten for neglecting prayer, which scholars explain as light discipline (Sunan Abi Dawud 495).
Conclusion — The “Gentle Correction” Trap and the Prophetic Alternative
Gentle words are good. But gentle words alone are a trap if the child never learns what to do. Harsh words are a trap too. The Prophetic parenting correction method avoids both.
Here is the whole framework in one line: Ask → Listen → Teach the alternative → Show affection → Make du’a.
Next time your child makes a mistake, try these five steps. Ask what happened. Listen. Tell your child what to do instead. Show that you still love them. Then make du’a for them. These small steps help you avoid common Sunnah parenting mistakes, like scolding without teaching, or teaching without love.
May Allah help us teach with mercy and raise children who love Him. Ameen.
