Rabbana wa atina ma waadtana ‘ala rusulika wa la tukhzina yawmal-qiyamah is a dua from Surah Al-Imran, verse 194. It means: ‘Our Lord, grant us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in Your promise.’
It is the last of the duas of the people of understanding (ulul-albab) in verses 191 to 194. In it they ask for two things: that Allah gives them what He promised, and that He does not disgrace them on the Day of Resurrection. Below you will find the Arabic, Roman English, Hindi and Urdu, the meaning of each word, how Allah answered this dua in the next verse, and the authentic Hadith about Allah concealing the sins of the believer.

What Does Rabbana Wa Atina Ma Waadtana Mean?
- Rabbana – our Lord
- Wa atina – and grant us
- Ma waadtana – what You promised us
- ‘Ala rusulika – through Your messengers
- Wa la tukhzina – and do not disgrace us
- Yawmal-qiyamah – on the Day of Resurrection
- Innaka la tukhliful-miaad – indeed You do not fail in the promise
The dua has three parts. First, they ask Allah to give them what He promised through His messengers. Second, they ask Him not to disgrace them on the Day of Resurrection. Third, they end with certainty in Allah: He does not break His promise.
How Did Allah Answer the Dua of Verse 194?
Quran 3:195 says: ‘So their Lord responded to them: Never will I allow to be lost the work of any worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another.’ It then says that those who emigrated, were driven out of their homes, suffered harm in Allah’s cause, fought and were killed, will have their misdeeds removed and will be admitted to Gardens beneath which rivers flow, as a reward from Allah. And Allah has with Him the best reward.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir heads this verse: ‘Allah accepts the supplication of men of understanding’. Ibn Kathir also mentions a narration from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, Allah does not mention women in connection with Hijrah.’ Then this verse was revealed. Ibn Kathir says that Sa’id bin Mansur recorded it and that Al-Hakim collected it and said it meets the conditions of Bukhari. This is Al-Hakim’s grading, as quoted by Ibn Kathir, and we did not check it ourselves.
What Does the Authentic Hadith Say?
This Hadith is not an explanation of verse 3:194 itself. It speaks about how Allah treats the believer on the Day of Resurrection, which is what the dua asks for.
In Sahih Al-Bukhari 2441 (also 4685, 6070 and 7514, and Sahih Muslim 2768), Safwan bin Muhriz reported that a man asked Ibn Umar what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the private talk between Allah and the believer. Ibn Umar said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah will bring the believer near and shelter him with His screen, and ask him: ‘Did you do such-and-such sin?’ He will say: ‘Yes, my Lord.’ Allah will keep asking him until he confesses all his sins and thinks that he is ruined. Then Allah will say: ‘I concealed them for you in the world, and I forgive them for you today.’ Then he will be given the record of his good deeds. The same Hadith is in Sunan Ibn Majah 183, graded Sahih by Al-Albani. The Hadith then speaks about the disbelievers and hypocrites, which is not the subject of this dua.

Benefits and Lessons
- Trust Allah’s promise. The dua ends with: ‘You do not fail in Your promise.’
- Ask for what Allah promised. The promise comes through His messengers, so it is real and certain.
- Fear disgrace on the Day. Even the people of understanding ask Allah not to disgrace them.
- Allah does not waste any deed. Quran 3:195 says this about male and female workers alike.
- Allah can conceal and forgive. The Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari 2441 shows Allah’s screen over the believer.
- The four duas go together. In verses 191 to 194, the people of understanding ask for protection from the Fire, say why they fear it, ask for forgiveness and a good end, and ask for what Allah promised.
When Can I Make This Dua?
Allah invites us to call upon Him (Quran 40:60), so you can make this dua at any time. We searched the Hadith sources we could open and found no Hadith that gives these exact words a special time or a fixed number of recitations.
Common Beliefs About This Dua: What Is Right and What Is Not Proven
People often add extra claims to this dua or mix it up with other duas. We checked each claim below against the Quran, the Hadith we could open and tafsir. “Not verified” means we could not find a reliable source. It does not by itself mean the claim is false.
- Claim: Allah answered this dua and said that He will not let the work of any worker, male or female, be lost.
Status: Authentic (Quran).

Status: Not correct.

How we checked: we read the Quran text and tafsir, the Hadith pages on Sunnah.com, and compared the top pages that talk about this dua. We could not page through every search result or search the Dorar.net grading database, so “not verified” is not a guarantee that no Hadith exists. For rulings, please ask a trusted scholar.
